Former prime minister Basdeo Panday celebrated his 80th birthday

Former prime minister Basdeo Panday yesterday celebrated his 80th birthday “very quietly” with his family and friends at his home in south Trinidad.

He said he spent the day with his two granddaughters who are here from Singapore and whom he hadn’t seen for some time.

He said he received a number of calls from friends and well-wishers and had plans to spend the evening at the home of one of his friends in Gran Couva.

The secret to his longevity, he said, was the fact that he has a “good heart”.

“The face is but a reflection of the heart, and if the heart if good then the face is good,” he said.

Panday, who was born on May 25, 1933, was the fifth prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1995 to 2001.

Having reached such a significant milestone, the octogenarian said he had fulfilled the biblical time allotted to him.

“I have exceeded my biblical allotment of three scores and ten, so I am on overtime. I am now on overdrive,” he said.

And did any of his political colleagues call to wish him happy birthday?

Panday said no one did, adding, “I did not expect them to call.”
