Hurricane season begins today in Trinidad and Tobago

caribbean_hurricaneToday marks the official start of the hurricane season, and senior meteorologist Shakeer Baig has said all signs indicate the season should be an average one.

“All the experts are predicting thus far we will statistically have an average or slightly above average season. There is no indication as yet of another record breaking storm season as in 2005 (when an unprecedented 28 tropical and subtropical storms were formed), but it all depends on various weather factors which will be re-evaluated later on in the year,” Baig said.

The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to end on November 30. The National Hurricane Centre in Miami, reports that in recent years, there has been an average of 11 tropical storms, six average-strength hurricanes (category one or two), and two major hurricanes (category three and higher).

However this year the centre and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are projecting a season which will see nine to 14 named storms and four to seven hurricanes of which one to three will be category three or higher.

2009 Atlantic storm names: Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa and Victor.
